Our Full Statement
The fossil fuel industry is destroying our futures and we no longer stand for it. Following an over decade-long campaign that saw generations of students and community members take on the fight for divestment, NYU has announced its plans to divest from fossil fuels, crediting student organizers in the decision.
This decision demonstrates the power of student organizing. For years the university dragged its feet, refusing to commit to divestment. Still, our movement persevered. We organized students, faculty, and staff, and through our collective power, drove NYU to be on the right side of history.
Thank you to the amazing team who ran the NYU Divest campaign since 2012, the Sunrise NYU members who’ve taken on this cause for the past three years, the unions and student organizations on campus who have had our back, and every NYU community member who supported our campaign.
This is a huge win for climate justice.
